Hunting the Spiral Horns - Nyala and Bongo
By Peter Flack
Written by some of the top professional and amateur African hunters, the object of this book has been to produce the definitive work on hunting the four sitatunga subspecies. A number of experienced hunters – some 19 in all – have contributed brand new chapters to the book. They read like the Who’s Who of sitatunga hunting and include such icons as Craig Boddington, Jeff Rann, Alain Smith, Rudy Lubin, Don Cowie, Robin Hurt and Brian Herne. Apart from in depth research on the sitatunga themselves, there are chapters on “How To” hunt these incredible animals, Rifles and Cartridges and Clothing and Equipment. Exciting accounts of successes and failures in the hunt are included as well as further lessons sourced from hunters of yesteryear such as Maydon (author of Big Game Shooting) who inspired James Mellon, author of the world famous book, African Hunter (excerpts from which are included), William Cotton Oswell (immortalized by his sons two volume biography), Selous, Shorthose and Count Szechenyi to mention but a few. The book is complemented by outstanding photographs provided by the contributors as well as professional and amateur photographers and friends. In brief, after reading this book you will know as much as it is possible to learn from a book about hunting sitatunga – the sly, shy, secretative one. This is the fourth in the five book series covering the hunting of all members of the spiral horn family, some 30 animals in total, if animals recognized by both the Rowland Ward and SCI record books are taken into account.
