Spanning an extraordinary man’s life which began in the days of the ox wagon era, reveled in the excitement of pioneering in colonial Africa with unlimited big game hunting, and continued into the modern times of turbulent African independence, safari hunting and endless adventure. Paul Grobler’s day has gone, never to be repeated. Paul’s reputation was built on his early prowess as an elephant hunter, an activity which not only contributed the finance, via ivory sales, for his early farming ventures, but also provided the grounding for his later involvement in the first major elephant culling operations in the Game Parks of Southern Africa. A lifetime of adventurous exploits in the African wilds is, by definition, loaded with potential dangers but Paul’s powers of survival varied from the uncanny to the bizarre. Did the mystique of Africa, the stuff of fate and fable, envelop and protect him when the old witch cast her spell? Who knows?
